By the time Kelly arrived at the law university it was already half past one. Edmund Stride was anxiously pacing around the front of the classroom while Avery Nichols sat at the window, playing the role of lookout. Peter Chapman and Marcus Eddowes were solemn, playing a brief round of cards, when Kelly burst through the door.

“Sorry I’m late,” Kelly said, stopping in front of Nichols and Stride.

“At last, Mr. Kelly. I’m sorry, was there a more pressing matter you had to attend to in your idle time rather than meeting us here at the university at noon?” Stride asked, sardonically. “Glad you don’t let a little fuss like a dead whore’s murder throw off your whole fucking day. That attitude will serve you nicely in prison.”

Nichols obviously hadn’t told Edmund about Addison--- and Avery only knew the half of it. If Stride found out Kelly had even walked Addison home, it would be like pouring kerosene on the fire. Kelly stood before the group with a target across his chest.

“I had to stop home so my mother would know I was alright,” he replied calmly, “I told her I didn’t come home last night because I was at the library studying for exams with the lot of you. I thought we needed a reasonable alibi, in case---”

“In case what, Kelly? In case we got stopped by police? In case we needed to form a plan of some kind? Maybe you should’ve checked with the lot of us before you made up our bloody alibi--- you sodding idiot!” Stride hurled the eraser for the black board at the opposite wall. “Especially since there are no fucking exams at the university for another three weeks!”

“Kelly you do realize, if this gets out that we were all at Lancaster’s pub last night, you are suspect number one,” Eddowes said, backing Stride.

“He’s right Kelly, you were the one alone with Melody all night,” Chapman added. “You were the last one to see her alive.”

“Are you fucking kidding me mates?” Kelly intervened looking around the room. “What do you mean I was the last to see her alive? Weren’t we all in the same room?”

“Yeah, high as kites! Wasted out of our bloody minds! And even if we saw something John, we can’t be for sure. Ether is a hallucinogenic drug. The Ripper himself could’ve been in there last night and we might not bloody know it,” Eddowes replied.

“But an intelligent, sexually frustrated individual of society, it’s starting to sound a bit like you Kelly,” Stride attacked. “You know, John…Jack…say, how are you with a knife?”

“What about you?!” Kelly snapped, turning the tables on his nemesis. “You’re the misogynist who takes up with prostitutes when he has a perfectly good fiancée at home. You talk about women like they’re miserable cattle. You’re a spoiled trust-fund brat. You’re off your ass half the time on ether. And you get drunk and play at the card tables five nights a week! So what about you, Edmund?!
